Heads Together were developing a long-term relationship with Shipley College; particularly with the Transition To Work Course. The aim was to use creative means to help develop confidence and self-esteem.

Working in The Methleys was all about creating a change of culture... if the streets were the only public space in the neighbourhood, then maybe it was time to re-claim them for public use (rather than leaving them to the cars). But that needed a bit of imagination, and making sure that everyone would share ownership.

Heads Together first worked with a group of people from the Upper Springland  Centre for Cerebral Palsy during a residency at Dundee Art Gallery. But Upper Springlands had its own purpose-built theatre, and we were soon invited to work with their resident theatre group.

In the Methleys, the Neighbourhood Action group had agreed a route forward: to create the first Home Zone in the country. But how to make sense of that to everyone in the neighbourhood?

Home Zones were a new concept for the UK, but it was an idea based on the concept of woonerven (streets for living) which had been in existence in the Netherlands for 20 years. Maybe it would be worth going to see what we could learn.

The newly-formed Creative Arts Partnership in Education wanted to encourage long-term relationships between arts organisations and schools. In our case we are still working with John Smeaton Community High School some 13 years later.

Our first digital interactive project also linked up the two sides of our work in the Street Years: education and community. Working with students from the Transition To Work Course at Shipley College, the challenge was "Can you take a photo that sums up Bradford?"

TOFTS was an ambitious documentary film project. Spending 3 months in the Burmantofts communities of East Leeds–and creating a film which was screened at four outdoor locations in the area.
