Back in 1997 we were asked to team up with
John Smeaton Community High School as their lead arts organisation;
part of the pioneering CAPE
Initiative [Creative Arts Partnerships in Education].
We started discussions with Senior Management
at the School - identifying the key issues affecting the school
and coming up with a range of creative approaches that could
make a difference.
Once the strategy was agreed, we were able
to complete a range of successful programmes of work which
have developed over the past five years.
One of the key aspects of the original strategy
was to enhance links with the local primary schools. We developed
a programme of work across the 21 schools that make up the
'Family of Schools' covering this part of East Leeds. With
an increasingly confident and creative set of schools, the
next step was to develop links within the communities where
the schools were based. This was achieved firstly with the
hugely successful 2000 Lines
book, followed by an environmental art programme 2000
Plus and leading to the current Community
Radio project in 2003.
A positive presence in East Leeds has also
led to a programme of creative community work. TOFTS
01 was a documentary video project looking at life in
Burmantofts.
Heads Together is committed to further developing
this work and evaluating the long term impact of creative
work in school and community.
