Selby District Council first approached Heads
Together in 2002 to look at doing some work in this rural
part of North Yorkshire.
They identified two main issues that they would
like to work with us on finding creative approaches. Firstly
the whole issue of local consultation where they were looking
to develop a programme of community events, in particular
neighbourhoods across the District. Secondly the active involvement
of young people in creative activities around the key issue
of local democracy and involvement.

Initially we
developed some work with the Community Education Department,
with support from Community Safety; working intensively
with a group of young people to document the Selby Fun
Day - creating an exhibition called Serious
Fun. |

The next project was in the Flaxley Road area of Selby
and involved the local residents' association, the housing
department, the Groundwork Trust and youth-workers from
Community Education again. The brief this time was to
run an intergenerational project with local adult residents
working alongside some of the young people from the
area to create a multimedia exhibition
for the Community Planning Day to be held in the
local school.

As our work in Selby develops, the understanding
and the range of partner organisations is developing. This
gradual evolution over time is important; it allows time for
partnerships to be forged; to try out various approaches and
develop strategies.
