Sheffield North East Education Action Zone
approached Heads Together in 2001. The EAZ asked Heads Together
to develop a partnership with the Hinde House Family of Schools.
They were concerned about the difficulties for children moving
from the local Junior Schools to the High School, and were
looking for creative ways to tackle this.
Heads Together are just about to enter the
third year with the EAZ, using creative approaches and working
with pupils from Year 8 at the High School alongside Year
5's from the Junior Schools. The projects have included photography,
design and creative writing and have now been embedded into
the core work of the schools themselves. So much so that the
teachers are using the techniques in other situations, e.g.
the transition from Infant School to Junior School.
As the life of the Education Action Zone comes
to an end, our direct project work with the schools may come
to an end also. But the process has been a real success: identifying
the issues, piloting some creative approaches and then ensuring
that they are embedded in the future work of our partner organisations.
Our work will continue as we continue to organise
professional development training for the teachers and support
for some of the more ambitious exhibition projects. But the
most important thing for us is to know that our work has had
a positive impact, even when we are not there!
